– Dimension 20mm x 20mm

– Precision of Measurement: up to 50ppm

– In compliance with ROHS

Hydrogen Sulfide is a colorless chalcogenic hydride gas in nature having a bad & foul smell similar to a rotten egg. The gas is toxic in nature, inflammable, and acts as a hazard to the environment and public health. The inhalation of this toxic gas can result in eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, etc and when exposed for a prolonged period to high levels may lead to shock, coma, and death. The common sources include wastes from humans and animals, wastewater treatment plants, crude petroleum, volcanic eruptions, and hot springs.

Technology We Use

What technology is being used in H2S Sensor?

The electrochemical method is widely considered to be one of the most effective ways to monitor the concentration of H2S in the atmosphere. This method involves feeding an air sample into a sensor that contains electrodes, a working electrode, a counter electrode, and an ion conductor.

In the electrochemical method of H2S monitoring, H2S reacts with the electrolyte in the sensor and becomes oxidized, resulting in the formation of water molecules and ions. These ions, in turn, generate an electrical current within the sensor that is directly proportional to the concentration of H2S in the environment.

H2S Sensor Calibration

Calibration is comparing the actual/ standard measurement with your instrument or device measurement. Calibrating the device or instrument helps in determining the accuracy of the instrument and measurement traceability. The sensor is exposed to H2S in the range of interest to calibrate the sensor accurately. NIST standard of gas cylinder is used as a reference for the target gas. The standard environmental conditions for sensor calibration used are 23 + 3oC temperature, 50 + 15% relative humidity, 0.9-1.1atm pressure and air velocity of 0.05m/s. The alteration in environmental conditions may affect the sensitivity of sensor but is easily compensated.

FAQs of Prana Air’s H2S Sensor

1. Will this H2S sensor come along with a digital board or not?

The sensor does not come with a digital board but if it is needed, an additional purchase of a digital board is recommended. Prana Air provides a USB microcontroller and a digital board which both have to be attached.

2. What conditions are used for calibration?

The standard environmental conditions for sensor calibration used are 23 + 3oC temperature, 50 + 15% relative humidity, 0.9-1.1atm pressure and air velocity of 0.05m/s. The alteration in environmental conditions may affect the sensitivity of the sensor but is easily compensated.

3. What is the warranty period of H2S sensor?

Prana Air provides a warranty of 6 months only on manufacturing defects.

4. What connectivity is used in H2S sensor?

Prana Air also has a USB microcontroller and a digital board. The H2S sensor is connected through the DGS to the USB to UART Bridge.

5. How dangerous is hydrogen sulfide?

As per OSHA guidelines, the personal exposure limit for the general industry ceiling is 20 ppm and for the general industry, the peak limit is 50 ppm. The level of gas can increase up to 2000 ppm in extreme cases. The exposure can lead to health problems such as conjunctivitis, nausea, teary eyes, coughing, loss of smell, and at extreme levels 1000-2000, it can cause nearly instant death. The gas is inflammable in nature and is capable to create a life-threatening situation like a fire.

6. How do I know I am at high risk of exposure?

People living nearby open gutters, drain systems, sewers, and channels are at high risk. Also, people working in the petroleum industry, sewer and wastewater treatment plants, sanitation department, agriculture industry, manufacturing of textiles, paper, and pulp industry, and mining industries are at high risk of exposure.

7. What symptoms will I feel if I am exposed to hydrogen sulfide?

The symptoms of exposure depend upon the extent of exposure. When the exposure to hydrogen sulfide is acute (shorter duration) the problems like nausea, irritation of the skin and eye, headaches, and convulsions are experienced. When the exposure is chronic (longer duration) it results in extremely rapid unconsciousness, dermal frostbite injury, and even death in some cases.

8. What measures can I take to protect myself from hydrogen Sulfide?

Continuous monitoring of using Prana monitors having H2S sensors will help you to identify the hazardous levels of this gas, this will help you to take protective measures such as avoiding the places that are known for H2S emission, keeping the house windows closed whenever the level rises or odor is detected, use of gas masks, avoiding visiting nearby sewage and waste treatment plant. However, the best method to avoid H2S exposure is the installation of engineering controls at workplaces.
